A recent study found obese patients who take the obesity and weight loss drug semaglutide have a decreased risk of alcohol use disorder, the newest evidence suggesting semaglutide and similar drugs may play a role in the brain’s “feel good” hormone dopamine, causing patients to no longer associate alcohol and other drugs with pleasure.published May 28 in Nature Communications, examined the electronic health records of almost 84,000 patients with obesity with an average age of 51 years.

Although the researchers aren’t entirely sure why semaglutide may affect alcohol use disorder, they believe the drug may interact with the dopamine system in the brain, which is involved in the rewards system of food and alcohol consumption, and cause patients to no longer crave alcohol.
