The 88-pound pit bull-mastiff mix later died because the owner delayed treatment during a 90-minute standoff, police said.

Perth Amboy police responding to a noise complaint Saturday night shot a dog after a resident ordered the 88-pound pit bull-mastiff mix to attack then officers and then barricaded himself inside his home for 90 minutes with the wounded dog, authorities said.

The 60-year-old owner of the dog is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer as well as disorderly conduct, police said. The man, whose name was not released, may also face animal cruelty charges, police said. The officers bitten by the dog have been treated and released from an area hospital.

The 88-pound dog also was behaving aggressively. The man ordered the dog to attack and it charged one of the officers, knocking him to the ground and biting him, police said.
