Seemingly healthy Dheeresh Turnball thought he was signing up for a routine study - it went on to save his life

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men and is estimated to claim 12,000 lives a year in the UK. Researchers hope the cheap and simple test, which can be carried out at home, could turn the tide and prostate cancer. Following an MRI scan and biopsy, 40 per cent of men with high scores from the saliva test were diagnosed with prostate cancer, while only 25 per cent of men with a high PSA level will actually have prostate cancer, the researchers said.

“The saliva test has saved two lives in my family. I’m incredibly grateful, and the treatment at the Royal Marsden was outstanding,” Mr Turnball said.Currently, men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer due to their age and ethnicity, and those with symptoms. The most commonly used tests for prostate cancer are: blood tests to determine the amount of rostate-specific antigen in the bloodstream , a physical examination of your prostate , an MRI scan, or a biopsy.
