Clinical director who treats Lanarkshire cancer patients is to do the heavy lifting on their behalf

An award-winning oncologist, who treats people living with cancer in Lanarkshire, is planning to lift 10,000kg over 10 consecutive days this month to raise £10,000 for Beatson Cancer Charity.

Ioanna says the weight-lifting element of her feat comes from the symbolic way in which patients see cancer. The Beatson is the busiest in the UK in terms of clinical activity and patient numbers, as well as being the second largest cancer centre in the UK delivering all of the radiotherapy and much of the chemotherapy to around 60 per cent of Scotland’s population.

Opened in November 2015, The Lanarkshire Beatson currently treats up to 80 out-patients a day requiring radiotherapy for breast, lung, prostate, bladder and colorectal cancers. With over 20 years’ experience in the treatment of cancer, Dr Nixon specialises in the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas, bone sarcomas and gastrointestinal stromal tumours .
