Tolu Ajayi’s ‘Over The Bridge’ has plenty of the elements; naked ambition, class division, failing public infrastructure, urban displacement, and mental health concerns.

Might seem like a lot for one feature film to handle but ‘Over The Bridge’ – which has been selected as the opening film of the New York African Film Festival this May – manages to juggle all these concerns with brisk efficiency.

At the time, Otudeko who was also a judge on the show, was mulling the idea of a story about a troubled professional. Her idea was sparked by news reports of a man who jumped from the famous Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. Ajayi says he’s heard the whispers about his delay in making a feature film but has felt no pressure to make one, just because. Hear him: “My thing is this, I feel tremendously accomplished, and just by telling the stories I have been able to. If I can get a story out that people resonate with even if it is short, I am good.”Ajayi credits his experience in both the corporate and creative worlds with helping him maintain the necessary gravitas for helming such a demanding production.
