The Conservative government was “never serious” about Levelling Up the country, one of the UK's leading public health experts has claimed.
“Sadly, not very well,” says Henri Murison, Chief Executive of cross party think tank the Northern Powerhouse Partnership. The analysis looked at the 12 Levelling Up missions set out in the 2022 white paper, using the government’s own metrics on how their progress should be assessed. He said: “All we’re really doing is putting back some of the money that local government has lost. It’s just plugging gaps that really needed plugging anyway.
Dame Meg Hillier, who chairs the Public Accounts Committee, described the levels of delay as "absolutely astonishing", adding: "In the case of Levelling Up, our report finds that the government is struggling to even get the money out of the door to begin with.”
