Dr Ben Martynoga, a biologist and author, shares 20 fun and simple tricks for getting your children to engage with nature

your family a priority with these 20 fun and easy activities for all ages. Always be safe and step lightly in nature to avoid damaging habitats or disturbing, but, most of all, have fun.

Offer a prize for kids who record their interactions with the wild. Encourage them to write, draw, paint , or use natural collage to record favourite discoveries. Give them a magnifying glass to see little critters and finer details.and get to know it in intimate detail. How many other creatures – from mosses and fungi to birds and mammals – call that tree home? Encourage them to close their eyes and explore by touch and smell.

If safe, encourage teens to camp with minimal grown-up supervision, even if that means sleeping in the back garden, or on a balcony or roof terrace.to identify and log as many species of plant, animal and fungus as you can in your local area. For extra edge, make it competitive: see who can identify the most species in an hour.Sometimes giving older kids a good narrative and a nerf gun is enough to overcome sulks and get them hunkered in the bracken “stalking” friends or siblings.
