The strange practice is gaining popularity on social media, with some claiming that it can draw out toxins, reduce fevers and even prevent illnesses - but a doctor is warning against it.

If you've only ever considered potatoes for your Sunday roast, crisps, or chips, it's time to think outside the box.

One TikTok user, @g0dblesstac0s, has shared her experience using the method on her newborn, posting a video on the platform demonstrating the process. "It works! She all better now," she captioned the clip, which shows her removing the potato-filled socks from her baby's feet. He adds: "From a scientific standpoint, there is no evidence that I am aware of to support the efficacy of this method in treating fevers or drawing out toxins. The idea may originate from folk remedies and the natural appeal of organic materials, but, for me, it lacks validation medically."

However, these microscopic invaders cannot penetrate through a person's skin. Illnesses therefore cannot be transmitted merely via touch - unless you defile innocent leftovers by unknowingly touching them with contaminated fingers and deposit this 'gift' in your own mouth. "Using natural remedies can sometimes offer psychological comfort to individuals who prefer holistic approaches to health."

In cases of fever in infants, Dr Cunningham advises using a reliable thermometer to monitor the situation and to seek medical advice if the fever is high or persistent. He added: "I always recommend using medically approved methods such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, which are safe when used according to guidelines."
