A Victorian child has tested positive for bird flu after returning to the country from overseas earlier this year. The Department of Health says transmission to humans is rare.

Bird flu or avian influenza has been detected in a Victorian child after they returned from overseas.The Victorian Department of Health has confirmed a human case of the bird flu, also known as avian influenza A.

A spokesperson said a child returning to Australia from overseas in March became unwell and subsequently tested positive. "The child experienced a severe infection but is no longer unwell and has made a full recovery," the spokesperson said. The Department of Health said "there is no evidence of transmission in Victoria" and reassured the community that the chances of additional human cases was "very low".Avian influenza is an infectious viral disease of birds that is not commonly detected in humans.
