The Texas Medical Board hosted public commentary for five hours on Monday regarding its proposed rules for abortion providers
Lobbyists Amy and Steve Bresnan petitioned the agency in January, requesting clarification for clinicians, patients and attorneys. The board released draft rules in March that are broad and rely heavily on wording from the abortion bans themselves. They did not list out conditions that may fall under the bans’ exemptions to protect the life of the mother, other than ectopic pregnancies, when a fertilized egg implants somewhere it’s not supposed to.
Dr. Sherif Zaafran, chair of the Texas Medical Board, said the proposed documentation guidance wasn’t meant to make doctors’ jobs harder and that the documentation could occur after treatment is given, which is common practice.
