A new study has revealed having nightmares in your sleep could be an early red flag sign of a potentially deadly disease.
Lupus is an autoimmune inflammatory disease known for its effect on several organs, including the brain. Scientists asked patients abut the timing of 29 different mental health and neurological symptoms - including loss of balance, hallucinations and depression. Just under one in four patients reported hallucinations and 85 per cent of these people said this symptom did not appear until the onset of the disease or later on.
Top Health Stories Today The study found using the term 'daymares' to describe hallucinations tended to lead to a "lightbulb" moment for the participants as they felt it was a less scary and stigmatised word. Patients experiencing hallucinations were reluctant to share their experiences, and many specialists said they had never considered nightmares and hallucinations as being related to disease flares.
Senior author Professor David D’Cruz,of Kings College London, said: “For many years, I have discussed nightmares with my lupus patients and thought there was a link with their disease activity.
