.LiberalAus Vice President Tina McQueen says she was 'very surprised' Melissa Parke was nominated as Labor's candidate for Curtin when the Executive Council of Federal Jury 'screamed very loud' that she was a 'very divisive figure'. MORE: Hardgrave

Labor's candidate for the WA seat of Curtin has quit on Friday night following remarks she made about the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Melissa Parke reportedly told a group of pro-Palestinian activists last month that Israel's treatment of Palestinians was 'worse than the South African system of apartheid'.

Ms Parke, who previously worked in the Gaza Strip for the United Nations aiding Palestinian refugees, said in her withdrawal speech that her views on the conflict were well known, but she didn't want them to be a 'distraction from electing a Labor government'. Curtin was the former seat of Julie Bishop and is one of the safest Liberal seats in WA. Image: News Corp Australia

Labor candidate for WA seat of Curtin pulls out of federal election race over controversial commentsLabor's candidate for the West Australian seat of Curtin, Melissa Parke, pulls out of the federal election race after reports she told a public meeting that Israel's treatment of Palestinians was worse than the South African system of apartheid. Controversial to who? Libs breathe sigh of relief Day 2 and we see Labor already stifling any hint of personal opinion from being freely expressed by their candidates. Similarly, neither will they stick up for an Australian journalist who's won the Walkely when he'd unjustly being prosecuted. I'm voting Green!
