The test results showed Stoly had all the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis – a chronic autoimmune disease that causes pain and swelling in the joints. Ms Mercer was given referrals to specialists for her daughter in both the private and public health system. They chose the public system for the “ease of referrals” and lower cost for a single parent.
“She’s on weekly injections that I give at home, of a low-level chemo drug. She’s on the highest dose they can give anyone,” Ms Mercer said. “We’ve been waiting three and a half years for a public housing house that’s wheelchair accessible. We’re in private rental and she can’t use the wheelchair in the house,” Ms Mercer said.Ms Mercer has been on a carers pension since her daughter was four. Her new diagnosis meant she needed full-time care.
In 2016 Ms Mercer applied on her daughter’s behalf to Centrelink for access to the Disability Support Pension . She has been rejected. Since her daughter’s rejection, Ms Mercer has become an advocate to help others navigate Australia’s welfare system. She runs a private Facebook group with almost 40,000 members.“We’ve gone off to do the program of support and support letters to go forward from here.Department of Human Services General Manager Hank Jongen said the government agency is looking into Stoly's case.
