A statue of colonial-era Tasmanian premier and medical professional William Crowther has been toppled over by vandals in Hobart.

The statue of former Tasmanian premier William Crowther, who cut off and stole the skull of a dead Aboriginal man, has been cut down by a vandal just hours before a tribunal decision on its removal was delivered.

Locals found the statue face down on the ground next to the base, which had been spray-painted with “what goes around” and “decolonize”. “The City of Hobart will fully cooperate with Tasmania Police to identify and hold those responsible accountable.”Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre campaign manager Nala Mansell said the vandal’s action reflected pent up frustration felt by many in Tasmania.

In 2023, the Hobart City Council voted in favour of removing it 8-2, however this was appealed in the Tasmanian tribunal of Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
