Air Force News

San Antonio's 'Big Willie' was the Air Force's flagship hospital and a cradle of medical innovation. More than 100,000 babies were born there. Now it's rubble.

Thomas Coney watched as a giant Caterpillar 385C excavator ripped loose a chunk of what remained of Wilford Hall Medical Center. A huge piece of concrete tumbled to earth from 11 stories up. Cooney, an Air Force photographer and retired master sergeant, worked at Wilford Hall for eight years. Seeing it reduced to rubble brought to mind a long-ago case involving a Mexican woman whose baby was born with an undeveloped rib cage and torso.

Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush dropped by to spend time with troops wounded in the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama. 'From a historical perspective, this place is absolutely wedded to the Air Force Medical Service,' said Maj. Gen. Thomas “Tom” Harrell, an aerospace research cardiologist who was Wilford Hall's last commander.
