Since 2023, the Democratic Republic of Congo has been grappling with an Mpox outbreak primarily linked to a specific MPXV clade I strain known for its high virulence and elevated fatality rate compared to other strains. A novel variant of MPXV, dubbed “clade 1b,” emerged in Kamituga, DRC, during the sixteenth epidemiological week of 2024. Exhibiting increased transmissibility, particularly through sexual contact, sparking concerns about its pandemic potential.
