Dementia and cancer could be prevented by taking a supplement every day, Dr Michael Mosley has said. The 66 year old creator of the 5:2 and Fast 800 diets mentioned that he takes Vitamin D daily since it's beneficial to the health of older individuals.
Previously, Dr Mosley would only take this supplement during the winter due to reduced sunlight exposure, however he has recently chosen to cushion his diet with these pills all year round, echoing the NHS's recommendations. As the doctor revealed: "I eat a lot of oily fish and eggs, both rich in vitamin D, and I also go outside for lots of walks, so my vitamin D levels should be well topped up. However, this year I am going to keep taking those supplements.", reports the Mirror.
"That, and the fact older people tend to spend more time indoors or in the shade, means that vitamin D deficiency is very common in the over 60s, even in the summer months, particularly if you have darker skin." However, he personally opts for 25 mcg , which he believes is safe according to NHS guidelines and aligns with research indicating the amounts needed to potentially prevent infections, cancers, and possibly dementia.
