'Asking for help doesn't make you any less of a doctor,' one NHS frontline worker told i

Big Readi spoke to NHS frontline workers Dr Ahmed Hankir , Jo Mildenhall and Dr Ally Jaffee about mental health. According to the 2023 NHS Staff Survey, three in 10 staff experience burnout because of their work

Dr Ally Jaffee, 28, is a junior doctor and mental health advocate based in north London. She has worked for the NHS for three years.medical school was a “high-pressure environment,” where she adopted a toxic mindset of “work hard, play hard” and “you can sleep when you’re dead.” She finished medical school, and has since become a vocal advocate about the struggles that those in the medical field face.

Dr Hankir left his family behind in Lebanon at age 17 to pursue his dream of being a doctor. To put himself through school and make rent, he worked restocking and cleaning jobs, sold kebabs out of a van, and worked 60-70 hour weeks.he experienced bullying and mockery by his peers, which led him to take a year off school. He said he was especially targeted for being brown and Muslim, and was the victim of racial slurs.

Despite these experiences, he said that his work is rewarding and the sense of purpose aids him in his recovery. “The most pressing issues at the moment are the impact of structural processes inherent within healthcare,” she said. “The day-to-day organisational challenges, and the feelings of exhaustion associated with the unrelenting demands of the work.”
