Opinion: There are over two million firearms owners in Canada from all walks of life. Many are my colleagues in the health professions

I am an emergency physician working at both academic and community emergency departments in Ontario. I was recently asked to sign a petition in support of a National Day of Action organized by the Canadian Doctors for Protection from Guns to ban “assault weapons” and handguns. This recently formed organization is not representative of a majority of physicians or health-care workers and I feel the need to respond with an alternative perspective.

I have owned rifles since I was 12 and have in the past decade become an avid hunter and competitive pistol, rifle and shotgun enthusiast No one in Canada today can buy such a rifle. Calling for their banning isn't just superfluous, it's misleading

WillyFtb Mark Lepine's father was a Muslim of Algerian descent. That's probably where he learned his disrespect and hatred toward women. He could have , but didn't shot any of the men there. But the Media , in this Country, have whitewashed or covered up that fact?

Canada has among the most restrictive gun regulations in the world-the only handguns that kill people are smuggled from the US and in the hands of gang members in Toronto largely - banning them will make ZERO difference in this situation but provide Trudeau with a divisive issue.

Guns don't kill. Neither do knives, vehicles or explosives. Remember that.

Guns that are made to kill people have no place in civilian hands period.

Polytechnique happened in 1989; what about Concordia shooting? What about Dawson shooting? The number of shootings are going up.

Well said.

Great piece. I only wish he addressed fact that the handguns used in violence on our street are overwhelmingly sourced outside Canada (once you strip out the nonsense of guns with tampered serial numbers but too short barrelled / high cap to be legal in Canada called domestic).

Terrible how a tragedy was used by power-hungry people to exploit by taking away the rights of innocent law-abiding citizens. Definitely seemed like a false flag operation.
