Australia’s medical device regulator has stopped short of banning textured breast implants after France and Canada outlawed the popular implants linked to a rare form of cancer | Kaubo

Australia’s medical device regulator has stopped short of banning textured breast implants after France and Canada outlawed the popular implants linked to a rare form of cancer.

Suppliers have 10 working days to respond or risk their implants being removed from the Australian market. “Based on these risk calculations we can make really informed decisions about what action is needed to protect patients,” Professor Deva said. The most recent evidence suggests the risk of developing BIA-ALCL was one in 2800 for women with textured implants.

There were 688 confirmed cases of BIA ALCL worldwide by the end of March. In Australia, there were 76 confirmed reports to the TGA as of April 8.Professor Deva said the length of time that particular implants had been on the market would be an important factor in calculating risk, considering ALCL usually developed eight to 10 years after implant surgery.
