The theme of this year’s World Health Day: Universal Health Coverage, for Nigeria, cannot be more apt. In the country there are lots of health gabs making it difficult for most of the citizens to access healthcare, especially in the rural areas, despite the availability of health centres.

However, in spite of the slow pace of activities in the sector, especially in Nigeria, the past 70 years, across the globe, have witnessed major advances in health and health technology, including life-saving medicines for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, hypertension and diabetes. To achieve the desired levels of Universal Health Coverage, WHO insists that effective leadership and high-level political commitment are critical. So also are adequate and sustained investment in health. Even more importantly, there is a need to address the challenge of antimicrobial resistance and substandard and falsified medicines.
