The Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute expressed alarm Thursday over the threat of osteoporosis confronting Filipino adults, with an overwhelming majority already suffering from calcium deficiency. In a statement, the DOST-FNRI said its 2021 Expanded National Nutrition Survey showed that 97.2 percent of adults and 95.5 percent of elderly suffer from calcium deficiency.

Filipinos should get enough sunlight, the DOST-FNRI added, as sufficient vitamin D is needed for efficient absorption of calcium. The DOST-FNRI also urged the national government to intensify the food fortification program not only for milk products, but also food products which could be good sources of calcium and vitamin D fortification.
