People born in 1990 are twice as likely to develop colon cancer and four times as likely to develop rectal cancer as those born in 1950

. But after months of training, once the buzz of race day had worn off, she began to feel that something in her body wasn’t right.

Looking back, she says, there were other signs of bowel cancer like weight loss and an increased metabolism, but she’d put these down to her intense marathon training. Following surgery to remove her colon, appendix and 27 lymph nodes, Shikha was told her cancer hadn’t spread, so thankfully, no further treatment was needed.

GP Dr Anisha Patel is a classic example: she’s young, slim and fit, eats a healthy diet and doesn’t have Lynch Syndrome, but was diagnosed at 39 after experiencing persistent constipation, explosive bowel habits, weight loss, fatigue and blood in her poo.
