Record numbers of measles cases across New South Wales have prompted calls for tougher screening measures on tourists visiting Australia.

So far 31 people have been diagnosed with the disease since Christmas, the majority of cases presenting as tourists or locals returning from overseas holidays.

Most cases have been traced to South-East Asian countries, including the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Eight people, including several babies too young to be vaccinated, have contracted the virus from infected visitors or returning residents. Image: News Corp Australia
