The Government has announced plans to overhaul the disability benefits system but the UK's leading mental health charities said the proposals 'will make things worse'
There are now 2.6 million people of working age claiming PIP and DLA – with 33,000 new awards for PIP each month – more than double the rate before the pandemic. This is expected to cost the taxpayer £28bn a year by 2028/29 – a 110 per cent increase in spending since 2019,The DWP said that since 2015, the proportion of the caseload receiving the highest rate of PIP has increased from 25 per cent to 36 per cent.
Earlier, Mr Stride suggested this would mean people with “milder mental health conditions” would no longer receive financial support. Dr Sarah Hughes, Chief Executive of Mind, said: “The PIP assessment is already an incredibly difficult process, and we are hearing from people living with mental health conditions that they are deeply concerned about the government’s proposed reforms.
