Groups such as domestic abuse charity Women’s Aid and mental health charity Mindwise were among those who lost out as the Core Grant Funding Scheme was slashed in half last year

A group of more than 50 charity and community organisations have called on Health Minister Robin Swann to restore core funding which was slashed as a cost-saving measure while Stormont was down.

Sonya McMullan, Regional Services Manager at Women’s Aid Federation NI, says the funding cuts mean Northern Ireland does not receive the same support as elsewhere in the UK. The public letter, published by Children in Northern Ireland on behalf of the charity organisations, addressed Minister Swann directly.

“The challenges we face as a sector have only increased since then and so in that context it is deeply regrettable that, in the absence of Ministers, the Department failed to properly value the work that we do.
