The man accused of murdering 50 people in Christchurch last month has been remanded in custody until June 14.

Brenton Harrison Tarrant appeared via video link from Auckland at the High Court in Christchurch this morning.

The presiding judge, Justice Cameron Mander, ordered a mental health assessment to determine the defendant's fitness to enter a plea.The 28-year-old defendant wore grey prison garb and was handcuffed for the appearance, which lasted around 20 minutes. Tarrant was arrested on March 15 for his alleged involvement in the shooting deaths of 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch.
