Ryan Garcia had to pass a mental health evaluation ahead of his boxing match against Devin Haney after both the WBC and the New York State Athletic Commission expressed concerns about his behaviour.
As a result of Garcia's erratic behaviour, NYSAC requested he undergo a mental health evaluation. According to ESPN, Garcia initially refused but underwent 'a battery of tests' last week, including a brain function test, which he passed A NYSAC spokesperson said: "The Commission has broad authority to assess the medical fitness of professional athletes , and engages in a thorough case-by-case due diligence process with every professional athlete based on their personal medical history and circumstances prior to their participation in competition," a commission spokesperson told ESPN on Thursday.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman was also left concerned by Garcia's behaviour, but insists those doubts have now "disappeared" after he was given the all clear by NYSAC. "There's always another day for a fight...," Sulaiman said.
