After a year of boots on the ground - the violence prevention team in Columbus created by Mayor Andrew Ginther hosted its "One Year In Review" Wednesday night.
"Providing activities for youth during downtime to obviously stay safe, but it also allows us to connect with them about violence prevention and education in ways that we might not otherwise be able to," Rena Shak, the director of the Office of Violence Prevention, said.Mayor Ginther believes funding and efforts are in the right place, pointing out the lower crime numbers to start the year.
While police data shows that this year, murders in Columbus are down from last, 5 people out of the 22 murders this year are teens. "I was able to go into Independence High School. I spoke with about 90 freshman girls and 50 sophomore boys, and one thing I connected with both groups was the need to find positive things and programming," Jamar Harris, who's part of the office of violence prevention team, said.
