The minister spoke Tuesday when the Acting Director-General of Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Dr. Bakut Bakut, and the Executive Director, African Institute of South Africa , Prof. Cheryl Hendricks, paid a courtesy call on him in Abuja.He said South Africa and Nigeria had important roles to play in the development of the world and stressed the need for the two countries to collaborate to make the continent a better place.

Onu noted that the application of natural science to convert natural resources to products and services required the knowledge of the Social Science and the management skills of the Humanities. He informed that the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology was taking the lead in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan to make Nigeria a knowledge-based society.

According to the Minister “this will enable the country convert many natural resources into goods and services we need and also export to other countries. It would help us to create jobs and fight extreme poverty.”Onu called on African professionals to be at the forefront of African development by bringing to use their knowledge in the natural science, Social Science and Humanities to solve many problems of the continent.

In his remarks, the Acting Director-General of Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution, Dr. Bakut Bakut said most conflicts in Africa were not only caused by social issues, but as a result of environmental factors.
