A mushroom expert has debunked rumours suggesting Rachael Dixon died from ingesting magic mushrooms during a wellness retreat in Victoria.

Ms Dixon fell ill while at the retreat on Fraser Street in Clunes on Saturday afternoon and died. A further two people were taken to hospital. Dr Alistair McTaggart, who has studied fungal genetics and evolution for over a decade, confirmed to SkyNews.com.au that psilocybin mushrooms are non-fatal, and there have been no fatalities in Australia from ingesting magic mushrooms.

"This isn’t the first time a mushroom has been eaten mistakenly as a magic mushroom, just last year in south-east Queensland somebody was picking magic mushrooms and got one of the wrong ones and they ate it fatally.
