First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom said she supports Senate Bill 135, which would allow employees of small businesses to take up to 12 unpaid weeks off for family or medical care.

California First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom is taking on a more visible role than her predecessor, Anne Gust Brown.

The governor has not taken an official position on the legislation and has said that, as a matter of policy, he will not weigh in on bills until they reach his desk. “He has always been ahead on these issues, so we just think alike,” Siebel-Newsom said of her husband when asked how she balances her personal advocacy on family and gender equity issues with her role as first partner.“She endorses the values of the bill,” said Hannah Milgrom, adding that Siebel Newsom still needs to read the final language of the proposal later this year.

The California Chamber of Commerce has fiercely opposed efforts to expand unpaid family leave throughwhich draws attention to laws corporate interests say will hurt jobs and the economy. The list has been an effective lobbying tool: Then-Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a “job killer” bill in 2016 to provide 12

Siebel Newsom commented on the proposal as she unveiled her first major effort, a public awareness campaign around existing laws to change pay differences between men and women.

First partner? Are you married? Or are you embarrassed to be married? I don’t get it...so you need to be different...is this what that’s all about? But maybe your not married..🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

If you can afford to be out for 12 weeks without pay. What are you doing working in the first place 😂

Wasn’t she his best friends wife?

First partner, is that a company? Why would anyone want 12 weeks off with no pay? Only rich people think that’s a great thing. People that live paycheck to paycheck can’t do 12 weeks without pay. Get real.

A small business can't afford to lose someone for 12 weeks without replacing them or losing productivity... Leave California...just a fascist regime...your business is not yours to run

It is a business not a country club.

Why not pay for a vacation in hawaii for all new mothers? Its not your money obviously?

First Partner? Lmao what a clown

unpaid? really healthy... capitalism like in wild west style? what if good workers die during the unpaid time and finding new ones will get more costly for those who hire workers? at least nobody can fire them thats a plus.
