The pass rate for black candidates in the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) exam in South Africa is significantly lower than that of white candidates, according to recent results. This disparity raises concerns about the marginalization of black chartered accountants and their mental health.

ADVERTISEMENT CONTINUE READING BELOW JEREMY MAGGS: Now, we reported previously that the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants administer something called the Assessment of Professional Competence . This exam is the last hurdle for aspiring accountants, CAs, to qualify. The latest results released late February, if I’m not mistaken, had an overall pass rate of just over 50%.

Read: Startling rise in chartered accountancy failure rates So where we are currently, overall, we are sitting with 35% of our black members but then when we look at it at the youth level, members who are below 35, we’re sitting with 53%. That consideration is very key, especially when you look at the study that was done because it looked at 2016. So I just wanted to first give you that context.

The second element is the contribution from the historically disadvantaged institutions . When we analysed the results, they actually revealed that certain of our HDIs, which is the actual institutions themselves, they struggle with ITC when we look at the output. This obviously may be due to several factors such as the broader education system itself in terms of what comes from the entire ecosystem.
