The go-kart Ruwaida was driving may have been faulty for some time without being checked in more than a month A 15-year-old girl described by her mother as a ‘beacon of kindness’ was strangled to death by her hijab while riding a go-kart. Ruwaida Adan was visiting Capital Karts in Barking, east London, for a youth group day out when she climbed into a faulty go-kart in August 2021.
The vehicle’s guard may have been missing ‘for some time’ and might not have been checked for more than a month before Ruwaida got into the go-kart. Ruwaida should not have been allowed into a go-kart while wearing ‘loose clothing’ like a hijab. However, the company failed to implement a system to identify customers with potentially hazardous clothing and have them remove it before being allowed to race.
