appily, since year 2000, through concerted global efforts, an estimated 54million TB death were averted, yet Tuberculosis, TB, still remains the world’s deadliest infectious disease and the second biggest global pathogen killer after HIV/AIDS. Today, one third of the world’s population, that is two billion people, carry the TB bacteria, out of which each year, about 10 million people contract this disease, with about 1.4 million recorded deaths every year.
Unfortunately, a similar success story is yet to be reported in Nigeria as the country remains one of those with the highest burden of the disease globally. At least 18 Nigerians die from the disease every hour. With only 25 per cent detection rate, Nigeria is classified among countries with a high burden for TB, TB/HIV and MDR-TB, and currently ranks sixth globally and first in Africa. Nigeria contributes nine per cent to the global 3.
TB is preventable, treatable, and curable. But only a few know that tuberculosis usually affects the lungs as well as causing adverse effects on other parts of the body. It is said to be contagious in nature and can spread through air when a person already affected with the disease sneezes or transmit respiratory fluids through the air in some other ways. The major symptoms of tuberculosis include chronic cough with blood-tinged sputum, fever, night sweats, and weight loss.
This can only be done through closing the gap between the private and public healthcare sector, which can bring about a major difference in fighting the disease. Moreover, awareness campaigns, events and consultations with various groupings, particularly those in rural areas and urban ghettos or slumps can also play an important role in creating awareness needed in understanding, detecting, treating and, above all, preventing the disease.
