'I think there is a big macro element to that low level of utilisation at the moment because things are tough for people and people are worried about the future.'

A tough economic environment for Australian consumers has produced a perversely beneficial tailwind for ASX-listed health insurers Medibank and NIB.

Out of pocket surgery costs have driven many private health insurance members to delay elective surgery. The good news for Medibank and NIB is that they are not paying out as much for these kinds of procedures as they have budgeted for. And it has helped drive the profit margins of the two health insurers to record highs in the December half year.

One health fund member with a recent experience with elective surgery described the view from the other side of this double-edged sword. She is one of many patients looking at the rising out-of-pocket costs for surgery and questioning the need for private health insurance. Elective surgery cancelled as Queensland hospitals reach capacityQueenslanders are being urged not to go to a hospital unless it is a medical emergency, as almost every public facility hits capacity and prompts the cancellation of elective surgery. Money for healthcare stopped the day the LNP was replaced by Labor. Queenslanders once again got sucked in by Labor lies. Qld now has the highest unemployment and debt in the country. Yet again, the paltry amount of hospitals, has contributed to breaches of our right to be seen within a 'reasonable' amount of time. In this rich nation, one cannot concieve why either side thinks 93,000 beds is adequate for 25 million. How ****ing stupid!!!
