The Alabama Senate is now considering a new bill that supporters say could fast-track the long-delayed process of getting medical marijuana into the hands of patients, but opponents warn is short-circuiting the existing law.

The rest of the new licenses in all three categories would be awarded after a hearing before an administrative law judge appointed by the AMCC Director, and subject to a vote by the full commission.to fix what they call a broken process, where they claim the AMCC handed out the lucrative licenses based on favoritism and not who could make the best product the fastest.

The Commission simply did not follow the statute, and the people who got licenses didn’t satisfy the statutory criteria. The Commission was able to conceal these violations by doing everything behind closed doors, in violation of the Open Meetings Act and the Administrative Procedure Act. That’s been the basis of the litigation.

Those multiple lawsuits now are before the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, where plaintiffs are hoping to depose Commissioners and AMCC staff about the multiple controversies involving
