Researchers at the University of South Alabama Health Mitchell Cancer Institute have identified a protein that could help doctors detect pancreatic cancer in it

USA researchers identify protein that could help with early detection of pancreatic cancer s early stages.According to the National Cancer Institute pancreatic cancer is often difficult to detect and diagnose. This is because in most cases there are no symptoms, or they mimic those of other illnesses.Dr. Santanu Dasgupta is a cancer researcher and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of South Alabama. He has been studying this topic for the past four years.

In order to carry out those functions, Dasgupta says the mitochondria hosts 1,500 proteins that travel into the mitochondria through the protein import system. That is where the protein TOMM22 acts as a door to the mitochondria. Dasgupta says the research team’s methodology includes studying tissue samples from pancreatic cancer patients. They took the samples and stained them with a TOMM22 antibody.
