'Veep' executive producer and showrunner David Mandel spoke to POLITICO about his news diet, the real-life inspiration for some of this season’s plotlines and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio

"Veep" premieres on HBO this coming Sunday, it will open as terminally self-involved former Vice President Selina Meyer, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, begins exploring a possible run for president of the United States, as she tries to fend off a burgeoning field of other contenders.

So we have, like, Eric Lesser, who’s now a state senator in Massachusetts but worked on the Obama campaign. We have Norm Ornstein, who is always good to call for constitutional questions ... Anita McBride, who was chief of staff for Barbara Bush and in Bushworld ... And then if we don't have someone they come in, so, what’s been wonderful, is,Not specifically on an episode, but just to talk to him about, like, running, but also to talk to him about what it’s like to lose ...

I wondered watching those first three episodes [of the new season], at one point Selina says she’s going to buck tradition and pick her running mate before the Iowa caucuses… [Recently, multiple outlets havethat former Vice President Joe Biden, who is seriously considering running for president in 2020, has been mulling asking former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams to be his running mate].

, we were trying to pick these sort of, like, not exactly wedge issues but I’ll call them wedge issues. And we picked the whole anti-daylight savings thing and it seemed like a crazy joke. Except now it’s an issue.Yes, but so has Trump! That’s something they agree on. He doesn’t like it either. I mean it’s hilarious. But that’s a Jonah issue. I laugh because it’s like, it’s funny but it’s not funny.

In the new season, the undercard presidential debate where Jonah is featured also includes a protest candidate who’s dressed like an actual magician. Was that based on the bizarre characters from the Brexit debates, specifically that guy who wore the bag over his head?. It’s that, but also, these guys do exist in every debate ... We’re going to see it again. There’s going to be 30 people running for the Democratic nomination.
