This series is a collaboration between the Dallas Morning News and the San Antonio Express-News. Reporting for it spans more than two years and is based on more than 140 interviews, a review of almost 300 medical journal articles and dozens of hours embedded with emergency medical providers in North, Central and South Texas. The series was produced with support from the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism’s 2022 National Fellowship, which provided training, mentoring and funding.
