Shigellosis is a bowel infection which is often spread by coming into contact with infected faeces.
‘Symptoms usually develop one to three days following exposure but can occur as early as 12 hours to as late as one week afterwards in some cases.’ And the bacteria can keep spreading via faeces for up to a month after symptoms fade. People with symptoms are urged to practice safer sex, maintain good hygiene, practice handwashing, and avoid preparing food for others. Shigella often comes with serious diarrhoea that contains pus or blood as well as a fever, nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
