Baldi is a student at the University of Washington majoring in public and global health and is originally from Rancho Santa Fe. Black women are 50 percent more likely to have a preterm birth than White women. Throughout United States history, Black women have long faced a disproportionate risk of preterm births, or birth before the 37-week gestation mark, compared to their White counterparts. Alarmingly, recent data revealed a statistic that should grab the attention of the entire U.S.
Research has shown that health care providers have similar levels of implicit racial bias when compared to the general population, causing an impact on medical decision-making. Physicians with greater implicit bias are more likely to demonstrate high verbal dominance when communicating in health care settings with Black patients. They do this in order to exert control, causing patients to feel unheard when voicing their concerns and ultimately being dismissed by their physicians.
