Michelle Mann ENTERPRISE – As progress continues on the state’s newest veterans’ home, questions about admissions and employment opportunities increase, Sandra Lucas told those attending the Wiregrass Republican Women’s meeting Thursday. A major step towards answers to those questions will come after a healthcare provider for the Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins is named by next month.
People are also reading… When completed by autumn 2024, the 182,000 square-foot complex will be home to 174 veterans and is expected to create approximately 200 new jobs. The ADVA board reviewed 12 proposals received before naming Enterprise as the location of the home. Groundbreaking was June 17, 2022, for the home in Enterprise which will cost approximately $115 million, shared between federal and state funding.
When the camp was attacked, then ranked Sgt. First Class Adkins rushed through intense enemy fire and manned a mortar position defending the camp. He continued to mount a defense even while receiving several direct hits from enemy mortars. He temporarily turned over the mortar to another soldier and ran through exploding mortar rounds to rescue several soldiers who were wounded near the center of camp. By the end of the battle, Adkins was hit 18 times by enemy fire.
