Gov. Gavin Newsom’s effort to fund mental health beds and homeless housing hangs on by a slim 0.2% lead

Governor of California Gavin Newsom speaks during a press conference on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2023, at the Los Angeles General Medical Center to urge support for Proposition 1 on the March 5, 2024 ballot. The proposition would overhaul California’s mental health funding system, and a $6.4 billion bond will expand access for hundreds of thousands of Californians, fund substance abuse treatment, and help get those suffering from mental health crises off the streets and into care.

Barring a major shift in voting patterns in the ballots yet to count, it is likely, but not certain, that the proposition will narrowly pass.from the Public Policy Institute of California. On election night, it came dangerously close to dipping below the simple majority threshold needed to pass. “They sound great when there’s a certain amount of distance, say several months, half a year, before the election,” he said. “But as they get closer to election, if the economy is a question mark for some — or in this case there is thisthat the state of California may find itself in — voters tend to get cold feet about voting for a proposition that they feel may cost them and add to the state’s financial woes.
