A Co Down mum affected by a major review into cervical smear tests within a Northern Ireland health trust says the experience is causing her huge emotional distress.
Test slides spanning from January 1 2008 and October 2021 are currently being reviewed and some women are being recalled for a repeat smear. The Southern Health Trust said it aims to have all slides reviewed by the end of June and anybody who needs a repeat smear should have it completed by the end of August.
"Then I got the letter last October so it's been there in the back of my mind since then and I'm worrying about it constantly. This has been deemed a more effective way of identifying those women who are at risk of developing cervical cancer, enabling results to be delivered for most women much more quickly.
"Because the review is no longer looking at me, my GP has had to refer me back to gynaecology so I'm back into a waiting list that's months long and will ultimately cost the NHS more unnecessarily."I feel totally dejected now but also scared that I may be found to have something more serious. My kids need me and I can't afford to get sick or worse.
