No matter how much work you do to unlearn diet culture’s brainwashing or feel comfortable in your skin, there are going to be days when you feel bad about your body. Dieting rarely leads to long-term weight loss and tends to cause weight gain.

No matter how much work you do to unlearn diet culture’s brainwashing or feel comfortable in your skin, there are going to be days when you feel bad about your body. Think about it: We live in a society that constantly tells us smaller is better, and that getting as close as possible to the “thin ideal” will earn you love, acceptance, and dignified treatment.

“Humans are deeply relational and need to feel a secure sense of belonging,” Amber Stevens, PsyD, clinical director of Galia Collaborative in Cincinnati, Ohio, tells SELF. “The constant pursuit of shrinking our bodies through dieting has historically been one of the more effective ways to reduce the threat of judgment from others.” But the reality is that dieting rarely leads to long-term weight loss (in fact, it tends to cause weight gain, research shows).
