A Sydney psychiatrist has administered MDMA therapy to a severely traumatised patient, making global medical history. The treatment, approved for prescription in Australia, aims to assist therapy for sufferers of complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

When a Sydney psychiatrist gave a severely traumatised patient a dose of MDMA in a borrowed Melbourne clinic, the duo made global medical history and were the talk of mental health doctors around the world.

One morning in late January, Ted Cassidy’s patient took a capsule containing a drug known by recreational users as ecstasy, but which was approved for prescription in its pure form by Australian regulators last year – for the first time ever, anywhere – to assist therapy for sufferers of complex post-traumatic stress disorder. It was one of the first dosages in Australia, alongside another given by Victorian psychiatrist Eli Kotler the same week. NSW’s interpretation of the federal guidelines meant the treatment could not be done in Sydney.
