When a Sydney psychiatrist gave a severely traumatised patient a dose of MDMA in a borrowed Melbourne clinic, the duo made global medical history and were the talk of mental health doctors around the world.
One morning in late January, Ted Cassidy’s patient took a capsule containing a drug known by recreational users as ecstasy, but which was approved for prescription in its pure form by Australian regulators last year – for the first time ever, anywhere – to assist therapy for sufferers of complex post-traumatic stress disorder. It was one of the first dosages in Australia, alongside another given by Victorian psychiatrist Eli Kotler the same week.
