The shadow Health Secretary has told trust leaders the health service must ‘reform or die’ as he set out his party’s vision for the future of the NHS. In a speech at NHS Providers’ annual conference in Liverpool, the shadow Health Secretary said the message was “not a slogan but a reality” to deal with the waiting list for non-urgent treatment on the NHS in England rise to a record high of 7.8 million.
Mr Streeting said a Labour government will ensure patients have elective (non-urgent) treatment within 18 weeks. He also promised waits in A&E of no more than four hours. Until recently, there was a target that 95 per cent of all patients should be admitted, transferred or discharged within four hours – something that has not been achieved since July 2015
