A friend contacted me the other day to say she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, that she was going to need chemotherapy — and to ask whether I had advice on what she could do, nutrition-wise, to improve her chances of a successful outcome.
The women were randomly allocated to eating either a standard low-calorie diet, or for two days a week, half were asked to eat just 650 calories from a low-carb Mediterranean-style diet . Apart from the impact of intermittent fasting on insulin levels, it may also help fight cancer by boosting the effectiveness of our T cells, a vital part of the immune system. So suggests a new study by Van Andel Research Institute in Michigan, in the U.S., published in the journal Immunity.
The study involved 106 women who'd been diagnosed with early breast cancer and who were about to undergo chemotherapy.
