Serious side effects of IVF are rare but can be life threatening. IVF drugs are designed to stimulate the ovaries to produce numerous eggs. This can cause Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome - a condition which at its most severe can be fatal and has been linked to blood clots, deep vein thrombosis and ovarian cancer.There is also concern about the use of unregulated drugs and unproven add-ons. Doctors argue that none of this can be properly studied without data.
"We can analyse that at a national level and see success with the dosages or drugs and also the risk to women's health. We should be able to reassure women who are having IVF treatment that what we are doing is fine, but in order to reassure we need data." The MP tabling the bill, Siobhain Ann McDonagh, says regulation simply hasn't kept apace with this change and problems are, in part, due to the fact that over 60% is still administered privately.She said:"It's a fast growing area of treatment and if you think about it, it's the one area outside cosmetic surgery that is done overwhelming in the private sector.
It shouldn't even be available on the NHS, like many other treatments available on it today it is not what the NHS was created to achieve, little wonder it finds itself in poor health.
